Friday after Mardi Gras

I never understood Mardi Gras. How is acting stupid and getting drunk any preparation for Lent?

3″The steadfast of mind You will keep in perfect (A)peace,
Because he trusts in You.

For thus the Lord GOD, the Holy One of Israel, has said,
“In repentance and (A)rest you will be saved,
In (B)quietness and trust is your strength.”
But you were not willing,

I think it’s helpful to read the foreground of Isaiah 30 because it talks about the problem – the desire to hear peaceful and happy things rather than true warnings about the future. Those who behave in such a way will have their path overtaken by the dangers they refuse to see. The only way to avoid this is to set aside time to ponder the wisdom of our actions and to consider the voice of God.

Well, I’ve never heard the voice of God – and I’m not sure I’d recognize it as such if I did. But there is a path that lies before me, and I must choose which steps to take at what times. It is impossible to escape consequences, and sometimes it is impossible to even mitigate consequences. But the only way to avoid total ruin from them is to accept them and deal with them.

What is true personally is also true communally. Americans will, sooner or later, have to abandon the “American Dream” of ever-increasing standards of living. But what happens if, as I said yesterday, we examine our standards and the honest answer is that we simply aren’t ready to give them up yet?

This chapter says that calamity will follow. There is a time when changes can have profound impact and there comes a time when that is no longer true. But when we determine that we will return our feet to the righteous path and our hearts and minds to the morally driven desire for justice, then we will find the rewards that truly matter.

Perhaps there is nothing more soothing to a man who thirsts for justice than to find it. Nothing more precious to a man who hungers for peace than to be fed upon it. Perhaps. But does the choice truly exist to embrace such endeavors? I think it does, but not without abandoning our current pathways.
