Haiti haters

I have a lot of sympathy for the people of Haiti. I’m glad there are people who are on their way to help them dig out and rebuild. But, if I’m totally honest, I’m freaking tired of the news reports.

I think, at this point, anyone who is going to respond has. It has moved from legitimate news to prurient vulture-watching. And let’s be honest, no one cared about Haiti six days ago. No one is going to care about Haiti six months from now. The flash of sympathy will fade and those people will be re-sentenced to a horrible life of poverty and hardship.

Hell is other people. We make sure of it.

I am not only tired of the news reports, I am tired of the United States sending BILLIONS of dollars to other countries, while we here are struggling to feed, house and protect our own. I feel badly for those people, BUT they have their whole country to help them. No one came to help us on 911, no one came to help us when Katrina hit. No one came when the earthquake hit California. When we have our own country all set, them we can send Billions to other country's. If I sent food out of my house, and my kids were starving, it would be considered child abuse and I would loose my kids. But when the government does it, it is called humanitarian aid. It doesn't make any sense to me.

With all due respect Chris, the situation is not the same at all. We had more than enough resources to deal with Katrina. Haiti on the other hand does not have those opportunities. The whole idea that people are struggling here is true, but I don't see thousands of children starving to death. Have we become so removed from the true struggles of the world that we truly believe our country is in just as much need as Haiti. This form of nationalism in my view is very dangerous to the health of the world.

Yeah…except we did have international rescue teams when Katrina hit – and we actually refused some aid money, too. I'm not sure which earthquake you mean. I sorta understand the analogy you are trying to make with foreign aid, but I think it falls far short of what you are trying to say.
