Sotomayor confirmed
I haven’t said much about the confirmation process of Sonia Sotomayor, mostly because the end result was predictable. It was, in the words of The Ahnold, “just doing the Kabuki.” It was a dog-and-pony show for everyone to trot out their talking points. Not one thing was discovered during the questioning of the nominee. We don’t know anything about Sonia Sotomayor that we didn’t know on day one.
The following Republicans voted to confirm her:
Sens. George Voinovich (Ohio), Judd Gregg (N.H.), Kit Bond (Mo.), Lindsey Graham (S.C.), Susan Collins (Maine), Olympia Snowe (Maine), Mel Martinez (Fla.), Richard Lugar (Ind.) and Lamar Alexander (Tenn.). Bond and Martinez are not seeking reelection.
I don’t think a single one would have voted against her if there were no hearings at all. Maybe they would. Who knows? Who cares? She would have been confirmed regardless. The Dems already had the votes.
Those that voted against her did so for one of two reasons: 1) They are Republicans and were going to vote against anyone President Obama nominated; or 2) They are conservatives and were going to vote against any liberal judge. Obviously there is a lot of overlap between the two groups.
The problem, to my mind, is that no one is actually saying that. Instead, they’ll mutter about her “wise Latina” comment and talk about “judicial activism.” But they won’t be honest. Perhaps too many of them have lost the ability to do that. That’s why I haven’t had anything to say about it.
