Music is meant to be experienced

Music is as old as humanity. As long as humans have had voices, or been able to beat on a log, or jingle shells, or whatever, there has been music. And, as with all human endeavors, some have been better at doing it than others.

But there hasn’t been a “music business” for very long. Three generations ago, there was no common understanding of “number one hits” or “gold records” or even “touring in support of the latest album.” Three generations before that, there was no understanding of it at all, common or not.

So I have to say that I’m not worried if the music business dies. The music I like best has never been commercially popular, and generally has been hard to find – even in this day when “everything” is instantly available for digital download. I won’t grieve if the next Britney is never found. In fact, I might just see it as reason enough to pull the plug on the life support machines.

As long as humans have voices or can beat on things, music will continue. We just might have to stop depending on Simon Cowell to tell us if what we hear is good or not.
