How not to govern

I get Religious Dispatches by email, and I felt like I had to share my response to this op-ed:

I have to say, this is one of the more offensive things I’ve seen so far.
First of all, “Imagine” is one of the most anti-religious songs ever to hit the airwaves. The first thing to “imagine” is that religion doesn’t exist – and then everything wrong with the world will be healed.
Second, the Democratic Party needs conservative voices. I’m so sick of hearing people say, in effect, “a liberal can win in any district in America”. It just isn’t true, and that type of hubris is a set-up to recreate the type of crimes against democracy that Bush perpetrated on America.
Third, who cares about Emmanuel’s father? My dad dropped bombs on Vietnam. Does that somehow make me a militarist? If Karl Rove sees this, he’ll be grinning from ear-to-ear as he watches liberals destroy the Obama Administration before the man is even sworn in.
Fourth – what evidence is there that would connect Emmanuel’s commitment to the “Israel Lobby” to keeping spiritual liberals silent? Honestly. Someone tell me what a person’s stance on Israel/Palestine – no matter what they believe – is tied to carbon-taxes, single-payer healthcare, or a global Marshall Plan. Please. I’m begging.
I’m all for holding someone’s feet to the fire. But the first step in speaking truth to power is to speak truth – not a hyperbolic mish-mash of guilt-by-association and a push for ideological purity.

I have nothing but respect for Rabbi Lerner. But I think he fell far short of his promise on this one.
