How short is that list?
The Star-Ledger is still busy hawking Jon Corzine for Treasury Secretary:
When it became clear right after the election that Corzine was a possible pick, he found himself fielding a rash of calls from New Jersey Democrats, some telling him he should take the job if offered, others advising him to reject it.Party leaders say they want Corzine to stay in New Jersey, citing his rebounding approval numbers and willingness to donate money to other candidates, political benefits from his relationship with Obama, and the Democrats’ desire to prevent a nasty internal fight to replace him on the ballot in next year’s race for governor.
Well, I don’t know that his numbers are rebounding. Q-pac shows his approval rating at a net negative as late as September 17. Sure, he got mildly positive numbers for his economic stimulus plan – but it’s early and there is a lot of work to be done to make that turkey fly.
Besides, as The Record pointed out yesterday, Corzine was not present at the Obama economic summit. He was at a wedding in California – so that means he isn’t off the list, but you have to wonder how short the “short list” is to have Corzine on it when he is MIA for its foundational meetings.
My read: Corzine is staying in New Jersey. There are two vacancies on the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, but I don’t think Corzine likes being among peers for such decisions. If Bernanke steps down, maybe Corzine will step up.
