Who would Jesus slap senseless?

This came to my attention through the writing of Katie Sherrod in Ft. Worth, Tx. Actually, I was aware of parts of it already, but she made it clear I should at least say something about it.

Bishop Gene Robinson is the Anglican/Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire. He is the first gay priest to be promoted to the status of bishop will openly living in a faithful gay relationship. For those who see their own hatred as blameless, he is “the one who started it”. The good news for Bishop Robinson is that he was joined to his partner, Mark, in a civil union recently. The appalling news is that the celebration had to be kept a secret because of death threats. Yes, people were threatening to kill the Bishop of New Hampshire for gaining legal protection for his relationship.

The concern, however, is that such threats have continued as Bishop Robinson prepares for the Lambeth Conference. That’s a big hoidy-toidy to-do in England where everyone who is anyone gets together and tells everyone else what they are doing wrong and how the world would be a better place if everyone were just like each other. That’s probably a negative view of it, but it is a sort of governing council and such things generally devolve to my description.

Here’s Katie for the home-stretch:

It goes without saying that Bishop Gene will need greater security and protection while at Lambeth. That actual expense will come to over 70,000 American dollars. Thank God, quite a bit of it has already been raised, but there is a wee bit of a gap - about 20 thousand American dollars worth.

That’s where you come in. I am counting on the readers of this Blog to be generous again. You were wonderful in responding with the Christmas Appeal for the kiddo’s in the City of God with over $10,000 in contributions. I’m hoping you will be just as generous with this Christmas in July Appeal.

Please make out your check to The Episcopal Church of St. Paul, marked “Bishop Gene” and mail it to:
