Corruption Hurts
When I first began blogging, I tended to cover a lot of developments in New Jersey’s political scene. Since I joined Blue Jersey several years ago, I’ve largely let that be the venue where I speak on that topic (and at NJ Voices, since that feature’s inception). (Anything I write at either site, by the way, can be accessed right here simply by clicking on the “What Else I’m Writing” tab.) But the story that is unfolding in northern New Jersey is simply too much for me to bound in such an arbitrary fashion.
The basic story is that Guttenberg Mayor David della Donna was taking money from local bar-owner Luisa Medrano in order to “make her problems go away.” della Donna is on trial, along with his wife, Anna. From all indications, they’ll both be found guilty and go away to prison for a while - and I have absolutely no problem with that. Nor do I have a problem with Medrano’s future prison term. Well, I would argue that neither party is going to spend enough time in jail, but they are all but assured of spending some time there, at least. The same cannot be said for Javier Inclan.
Javier Inclan is a long-time hanger-on in northern Jersey politics. I wouldn’t say that he is exactly a “token Hispanic”, but he just might be. I sure can’t find any reason why he’d be continually promoted. His tenure as Guttenberg City Councilman and Treasurer of the Guttenberg Dems is now marred by his testimony in the della Donna trial where he admitted in open court that he worked as the bag man for della Donna - taking envelopes full of cash and handing them to the Mayor. Yet he was chosen by Governor Jon Corzine to serve as Hudson County Clerk - where his office was found to be so chock-full of fraudulent paperwork and claims that were accepted at face value that his office had its power to issue passports revoked.
Yet somehow, Inclan manages to get promoted to lead Governor Corzine’s Constituent Relations efforts (no wonder the Governor doesn’t have a clue!). Then he gets yet another promotion to be the Deputy Chief of Staff for the Governor.
For what? Being corrupt? Oh, I’m sorry - he only turned his head away and let others continue being corrupt. He didn’t actually take money himself, so that makes him non-corrupt, right? Crackers. He’s in the sewer up to his armpits and he stinks to high heaven.
At one point, the Governor could claim ignorance of Inclan’s activities and retain him based on job performance - which is a stretch anyway. But now that Inclan has said that he knowingly violated the law and allowed della Donna to take illegal money so that Luisa Medrano could run her international slave-ring…why is this man employed? At all!
