Notes on Racism

So suddenly Barack Obama is black enough to answer for every black person that ever annoyed someone. Remember when he wasn’t black enough?

The NY Times has some poll numbers in reaction to Obama’s speech on race.

Debra Haffner balances rights with rights - from the pulpit and from the pew.

Ann Howard remembers that everyone has their place.

Diana Butler Bass finds the specter of Frederick Douglas watching intently.

Jonathan Walton finds it to be patriotic treason.

Glenn Greenwald cries out “racist” and you can judge for yourself if it’s deserved or not. I’ll add some thoughts in another post. For now, I’ll say that I don’t like throwing “racist” at people because it rarely, if ever, advances a conversation and generally just lets it degenerate straight to the verbal equivalent of Molotov cocktails.
