Deconstructing the vote

Texas is a funny state. Mike Huckabee, for example, pulled in better than a third of the Republican vote – 518,139 votes. But Gene Kelly pulled in even more votes – 581,973 votes – but that was only about 27% of the vote in the Democratic primary.

And, no, Gene Kelly is not the dancer guy. He’s just a guy with the same name as the deceased triple-threat. His campaign? What’s that?

And Texans might not be so crazy about John McCain. He pulled in 706,449 votes compared to 988,191 votes for US Senator John Cornyn. The thing is that Cornyn is fairly unpopular – only 59% of Republicans approve of the job he’s doing. Does this mean that Texas could be in play for the general?

Maybe. Probably not. But if Democrats can make Republicans spend money defending Texas, it will help elsewhere.
