Mid-Day Herd

Glenn Greenwald is saying bipartisanship ain’t what it’s sput out to be:

“bipartisanship” is already rampant in Washington, not rare. And, in almost every significant case, what “bipartisanship” means in Washington is that enough Democrats join with all of the Republicans to endorse and enact into law Republican policies, with which most Democratic voters disagree. That’s how so-called “bipartisanship” manifests in almost every case.

And he has the data to back it up. If we want to break the partisan deadlock in DC, we’re going to have to start with the problem – the Republican “My way or the Highway” ideology.

With the departure of Rudy 9iu11iani and John Edwards, a fair question is: Who will their voters support? Will Rudy’s minions bolt to the other northeastern liberal Republican masquerading as a conservative? Or, having been burned by a loser once, will they jump on John McCain’s flagship? Will John Edwards’ folks go for change with Barack Obama? Or will they go for the establishment Hillary Clinton? More to the point, without Edwards, will Obama make deeper inroads with white voters or will they bolt to the remaining paleface?

The defeat of Rudy does not, alas, spell the end of 9/11 politics. No, there is still a VP nominee to be picked and, if successful, a cabinet. Plus Eliot Spitzer isn’t looking so popular these days.

Did you know that “reasonable people” can disagree on torture? So Attorney General Mukasey claims. If torture is on the table, one has to wonder what is not. Rape? Murder? Mayhem? Rigging an election?
