Who gets to vote?

A state laws in Indiana are being reviewed to see if they disenfranchise voters – by requiring them to show proof of ID.

The U.S. Supreme Court is now scrutinizing whether that statute violates the first and 14th amendments, in the most contentious legal battle over voting since the high court issued a bitterly divided decision eight years ago that stopped Florida’s recount and handed the presidency to George W. Bush.

I can see the issue from both sides. First, if we are going to have anything close to an honest election, there should be some proof of ID for people who are casting their votes. Otherwise, unscrupulous persons could cast multiple votes in the names of people they know won’t make it to the polling station. But if it costs money to prove your ID, then we have effectively returned to the days of a poll tax.

The answer seems easy enough. Either issue a free voter ID that is good for nothing but casting a ballot or accept a broad range of documents to prove voter ID. This isn’t rocket science, folks.
