Why I don’t support Hillary Clinton…yet

I just got through a couple of blog posts that will help illustrate why, even though I like Hillary Clinton, I don’t think Democrats do anything good by nominating her.

The first is one I wrote at Blue Jersey, where Hillary is found to be the most likely and least likely candidate to win support among people. This is the very definition of “polarizing”. In fact, the numbers for those who hate Hillary are about the same as those that continue to support George W. Bush – and I don’t think I’m out on much of a limb to say they are likely to be the same people. Even in liberal New Jersey, Hillary turns out more people to vote against her than she does to vote for her – by 2%. If she wins the nomination, she’ll carry every dependably blue state.

Over a year ago I began asking, “Which state carried by George W. Bush in either 2000 or 2004 will Hillary carry in order to win the general election?” So far, no one has given me a decent answer.

That brings up this diary at DKos. I’m not going to say that every word written there is the Gospel. But the problem is that it is written by someone who will support her in the general election. This is how many Democrats feel about Hillary Clinton. How many independents will jump the broom for her? We know how many Republicans will (zero).

For my part, the longer the race continues, the less I am impressed with Hillary Clinton. She is well ahead in the delegate count and in the polls. All she has to do is run out the clock and let Obama get ever more desperate and show how inexperienced he is at running a coast-to-coast campaign. But instead, she chooses to run a destructive campaign attacking a person who would be a fantastic VP and young enough to pick up in eight years after Hillary can no longer serve.

The time for Hillary may be “here and now” but one thing that has become certain is that Barack Obama is the future of the Democratic Party. But Hillary Clinton is so intent on getting a position she believes she deserves that she is willing to risk that. I, for one, have had too much of that kind of leadership.
