Republican Ignorance and Indifference to Death

Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell proves today, in one foul statement, that he both doesn’t know what’s going on in Iraq and doesn’t care.

His comment at a constituent meeting:

“Unfortunately, most of our friends on the other isle are having a hard time admitting things are getting better; some days I almost think the critics of this war don’t want us to win. Nobody is happy about losing lives but remember these are not draftees, these are full-time professional soldiers.

First, I want to thank the Grayson County News-Gazette for saying that Democrats live on an island somewhere (mis-spelling “isle” for “aisle”). It’s nice to know that we aren’t on another planet altogether.

Second, as the OpenLeft diary points out, it is incredibly cold-hearted to belittle the death of a soldier because he or she receives a paycheck for doing that job. That the loss of human life can be cast aside with such abandon doesn’t speak well of the Senator’s worldview or his soul. It says that he accepts the deaths of these soldiers on his behalf as his right.

Beyond that, he’s just wrong. It isn’t full-time professional soldiers that are getting killed - or not only full-time professional soldiers - it’s part-time reservists and national guard soldiers that have been called up to duty.

McConnell has been one of the chief Bush Apologists for the War in Iraq. I guess it makes it easier to send men to die if you: 1) Think they deserve it; and 2) Don’t know who they are anyway.

McConnell gets my vote for Worst Person in the World:
